Teaching opportunities, rigorous assessment and feedback, and the sharing of good practice are supported by IfE’s Teaching, Learning and Assessment Policy and Procedures.

Lecturers differentiate tasks where appropriate and provide formative feedback on quality and improvement.

Online and blended learning

Part-time online and blended delivery offers flexibility and allows participants to access materials at convenient times. Collaborative tools and online learning activities place participants at the centre of learning and support peer discussion, content creation and feedback.

Self-study and work-life-study balance

Programmes require research, reading, reflection and revision beyond scheduled lectures. Participants should plan regular weekly self-study time. IfE policies and support services aim to acknowledge the academic and personal demands of combining study with work and other commitments.

Student Affairs and personalised support

The Student Affairs Office supports prospective and current course participants with career and personal guidance. Course Coordinators are the first point of reference for programme information, timetables, assignments and policy questions.

Inclusive environment and wellbeing

IfE is committed to equality of opportunity, inclusion and diversity. The Pembroke campus includes a multi-faith room for prayer, meditation and quiet reflection. Teaching and support practices recognise that wellbeing is fundamental to a positive study experience.

Quality, feedback and practical support

Professional Learning and Development

The IfE offers a comprehensive Professional Learning and Development (PLD) programme designed to support all professionals working with children in schools. Recognising that high-quality professional learning is central to improving outcomes for children and young people, this provision is carefully tailored to meet the evolving needs of educational settings.

A choice of accredited awards and non-accredited PLD opportunities ensures flexible pathways that respond to diverse professional goals and career stages. The PLD sessions are available both face-to-face and online, providing access for schools and individual practitioners. Supporting educators and other school-based professionals such as counsellor and educational psychologists, the PLD selection is practical, evidence-informed, and directly applicable to classroom and whole-school contexts.

The IfE works closely with Senior Leadership Teams (SLT) to organise personalised PLD within schools. SLT members are supported in identifying priorities, and designing bespoke sessions to deliver targeted professional development that aligns with school improvement goals and staff needs.

Management-driven sessions can be requested for a school or organisation. Dates, availability, fees and the final application route must be confirmed for each scheduled delivery.

Research

Special interest groups

Communities of academics, researchers, course participants and stakeholders advancing a shared area of interest in education — managed and supported by the School of Research.

Introduction Rich text

Establishing a special interest group fosters inclusivity, enabling academics to engage in discussions and collaborations beyond our institution — broadening our intellectual horizons and enriching the academic community.

The Institute for Education is establishing Special Interest Groups within our community of academic staff, researchers, staff members, course participants and other interested stakeholders actively engaged in teaching, learning, research and professional development.

What is a SIG Rich textCallout box

What is a Special Interest Group?

A SIG is a community within a larger organisation with a shared interest in advancing a specific area. Within education, SIGs typically form to advocate for specific issues, promote innovative practices, influence policy, conduct research and collaborate on initiatives aimed at advancing shared goals.

As a hub for educational innovation, research and collaboration, the IfE recognises the value of fostering specialised communities. SIGs act as catalysts for change — a platform for educators, researchers, practitioners, policymakers and stakeholders to share knowledge, explore ideas and address challenges together.

The School of Research within the IfE manages and supports every SIG set up within the institution.

Flexibility and telework

Flexible start times, work-life balance and remote working arrangements are described as supporting staff with travel, focused work and life commitments.

Family leave and support

Study leave and regular one-to-one conversations support continuing development, feedback and shared goals.

Community and sustainability

Making a positive contribution

The current CSR content describes community collections and practical environmental measures including double-sided printing, digitising processes and recycling. It also sets out an ambition to make the premises highly energy-efficient and move towards near-zero operational carbon.

Keep ambition separate from achievement. Completed measures need evidence, while future building or carbon targets need an approved timeframe, owner and progress measure.

Migration clean-up: broken animated counters on the current CSR page are not reproduced. IfE must verify every quantity and beneficiary before publishing it as an impact figure.

Common questions Accordion

Before you contact a support service

Where should I start if I am unsure?

Start with Student Affairs and briefly explain what is affecting your studies or participation. The published content should make clear how requests are routed when another team owns the next step.

Can I ask for help before the situation becomes serious?

Yes. The proposed service encourages early contact so the correct options and formal processes can be explained before an important deadline is missed.

What information should I include?

Include your name, programme or activity, a concise description of the issue, its effect on participation and any relevant date. Do not send sensitive evidence through ordinary email unless IfE has confirmed that route.

How are accessibility adjustments agreed?

IfE must publish the responsible contact, request stages, evidence requirements, decision owner, expected timing and review/appeal route. The wireframe does not invent these policy details.

Is a support request confidential?

IfE must provide an approved confidentiality and privacy statement, including any limits and when information may need to be shared. Until then, ask the team how sensitive information should be submitted.

    Quality assurance

The Institute’s structured Quality Management System supports academic planning, delivery and continuous improvement so that course participants receive the best possible educational experience.

    Quality at IfE Rich textImageAccordion

    A shared responsibility

    Standards, reflection and improvement

The Quality Management System contributes to delivery of the strategic plan and fulfils the requirements of Malta’s National Quality Assurance Framework for Further and Higher Education.

IfE keeps abreast of external developments and good practice and is committed to being a self-critical higher education institution. Academic standards depend on staff, course participants and external stakeholders continually evaluating and reflecting on the quality of the educational experience.

    Main principles underpinning quality assurance
    • Quality assurance and enhancement are fostered through critical self-reflection in partnership with course participants.
    • Employees, service providers and lecturers share responsibility for enhancing learning, while participants help transform their own and their peers’ experience.
    • Collegiality and rigorous external peer review identify improvement opportunities and encourage collaboration and the exchange of good practice.
    • Recurrent evaluation of academic standards sits at the heart of IfE procedures.
    • Procedures should be harmonised across the Institute.
    • Course participants and other stakeholders help shape policies and mechanisms for quality and standards.
    • Quality-related policies and procedures are reviewed regularly so they remain fit for purpose in a changing environment.

Internal Quality Assurance Rich textCard gridAccordion

    IQA

    Improving programmes from within

The IQA system systematically improves programmes by evaluating whether course-participant expectations are met and by involving stakeholders with an interest in educational services. IfE gathers and analyses evidence such as participant, lecturer and external-stakeholder feedback, programme completion and the employment situation of course participants, then plans concrete improvement actions as part of total quality management.

    01

    Demonstrate quality

Ensure teaching and learning quality is documented, verifiable and assessable.

    02

    Make information clear

Help course participants, lecturers and stakeholders find and understand quality information.

    03

    Improve continuously

Promote continuing enhancement across every programme offered by the Institute.

    Three internal quality processes

These related processes replace three short legacy subpages. Each section keeps its explanation and authoritative documents together.

Internal review Departments, programmes and services

Internal review is integral to IfE’s commitment to continuous improvement and maintaining high standards across its operations. It contributes to the best possible course-participant experience and supports implementation of the Policy for Quality Assurance and Enhancement.

Reviews are conducted annually for all departments, programmes and services. Ad-hoc reviews may also be initiated in response to regulatory changes, significant operational changes or an identified area for improvement.

Internal verification Assessment design and decisions

Internal verification supports continuous improvement across learning programmes and ensures that programme requirements and nationally and internationally recognised standards of attainment are met. It is grounded in the principle that assessment must be valid, reliable, practicable, equitable and fair.

For internally assessed modules, verification checks that appropriate assessment opportunities are available and that work is assessed accurately to national standards.

Consistent gradingAssessment and grading are consistent across the programme.
Fit-for-purpose briefsAssignment briefs enable participants to produce evidence against the intended criteria.
Sound decisionsAssessment decisions judge evidence accurately and feedback meets the required standards.

The process is intended to be supportive and to help lecturers and Internal Verifiers develop good practice.

Lecture observation Reflection and teaching practice

Lecture observation is part of IfE’s internal quality assurance and enhancement structure. It encourages lecturers to reflect on their teaching, identify strengths and development needs, learn from one another, share good practice and continually refresh the quality of teaching and learning.

    • Reflect on teaching effectiveness and identify development needs.
    • Recognise strengths and areas where teaching and learning could improve.
    • Learn from colleagues and develop shared understanding and practice.
    • Foster discussion and dissemination of good practice.
    • Keep the quality of teaching and learning current and continually enhanced.

External Quality Assurance Rich textCallout boxDocument links

    EQA

    Independent review and accountability

IfE is subject to a five-yearly external review by the Malta Further and Higher Education Authority (MFHEA). External quality assurance may take place at institutional or programme level and tests the Institute against nationally set standards while providing independent insight into the effectiveness of internal quality-assurance procedures.

The process supports development and accountability to course participants, employers and other stakeholders. It examines whether internal quality management is fit for purpose, compliant with standards and regulations, aligned with national education goals, and implemented effectively, comprehensively and sustainably.

    External frameworks and evidence

Migration rule: retire the five thin legacy pages after this consolidated page is approved, redirect their URLs to the matching anchored sections, and manage every linked policy or report as a governed Document with owner, version, effective/review dates, status and accessible file.

    Why

The GDPR has been introduced to:

    • better reflect the data protection challenges arising in the digital age
    • modernise data protection arrangements to make organisations more accountable
    • give individuals greater control over their own personal data
    • address globalisation and harmonise data protection practice across Europe

    What’s new

The GDPR is similar to the Data Protection Act (Cap 440) and introduces many changes to data protection practices. These require the Institute for Education to review and revise all approaches to data handling. Key changes include:

    1. tougher financial penalties – fines of up to €20 million
    2. strong rules around record keeping and new financial penalties for not being able to evidence accountability for our processes – fines of up to €10 million
    3. a more stringent data breach notification process: only 72 hours from detection to notify a data breach to the ICO
    4. a broader definition of personal data
    5. a new approach to consent, freely given positive opt-in and easy to withdraw
    6. new and expanded rights including a right to erasure and data portability
    7. a reduced timeframe for handling Subject Access Requests – from 40 days down to 1 month, and the DPA £10 fee is no longer applicable
    8. mandatory privacy impact assessments for new services/projects where risks are high
    9. more restrictive rules around the use of child data
    10. revised processes for international data transfers
    11. a requirement for large organisations to appoint a Data Protection Officer.

Source-content issue: references to the UK ICO and a £10 DPA fee appear on the current IfE page and require Malta-specific legal review.

    Scope

    Personal data

Any information relating to an identified or identifiable natural person (‘data subject’); an identifiable natural person is one who can be identified, directly or indirectly, in particular in reference to an identifier such as name, an identification number, location data, an online identifier or to one or more factors specific to the physical, physiological, genetic, mental, economic, cultural or social identity of that natural person.

    Special categories of personal data

This used to be called “sensitive personal data” under the Data Protection Act (Cap 440), and now includes:

    1. racial or ethnic origin
    2. political opinions
    3. religious or philosophical beliefs
    4. trade union membership
    5. health
    6. the processing of genetic data, biometric data for the purpose of uniquely identifying a person
    7. sex life or sexual orientation

    Criminal convictions or alleged offences

In a shift from the previous Data Protection Act, this is not classed as “sensitive personal data”, but is covered in GDPR Article 10 and is treated by the Institute for Education as high-risk personal information.

    GDPR principles

The General Data Protection Regulation introduces six principles. These are that personal data must be:

    1. processed lawfully, fairly and in a transparent manner in relation to individuals
    2. collected for specified, explicit and legitimate purposes and not further processed in a manner that is incompatible with those purposes; further processing for archiving purposes in the public interest, scientific or historical research purposes or statistical purposes shall not be considered to be incompatible with the initial purposes
    3. adequate, relevant and limited to what is necessary in relation to the purposes for which they are processed
    4. accurate and, where necessary, kept up to date; every reasonable step must be taken to ensure that inaccurate personal data are erased or rectified without delay
    5. kept in a form which permits identification of data subjects for no longer than is necessary; longer storage for archiving in the public interest, scientific or historical research or statistical purposes remains subject to appropriate safeguards
    6. processed in a manner that ensures appropriate security, including protection against unauthorised or unlawful processing and against accidental loss, destruction or damage, using appropriate technical or organisational measures.

    Compliance status

The Institute for Education is committed to making its online services accessible to all. We are dedicated to continuously improving accessibility of our services. We do this by adopting best practices as communicated by stakeholders, such as FITA and users.

    Compliance process

Our website is designed to work with the latest web browsers such as Edge, Safari, Firefox and Chrome browsers.

As part of this effort, we adhere to accessibility standard EN310549 and WCAG 2.1 guidelines. Our online resources and forms are evaluated both manually and programmatically for conformance to WCAG 2.1 Level AA guidelines. Our websites are designed to work well and be accessible when being accessed with suitably updated hardware and software products.

Further recognising that adherence to standards and guidelines cannot on its own ensure that a product is accessible, we also carry out usability evaluations in collaboration with users, so as to gather necessary feedback. We also strive to implement accessibility for information channels that are provided via other platforms wherever possible, such as social media.

Source-content check: IfE should confirm whether “EN310549” on the current page should read “EN 301 549”, and replace general claims with evidence from the rebuild’s final audit.

    Accessibility measures

Our website does not rely on font, magnification and colour modification widgets. This is because such functionalities are already integrated in most web browsers or are available via different add-ons and plugins which different users are free to customise to their needs. As a result, these user customisations are available for most websites, not only that of the Institute. In order to allow for this level of customisation, we seek to maximise compatibility with these user modifications.

As part of and in addition to the above-mentioned guidelines, our websites implement the following accessibility features:

    1. Maintain a consistent HTML heading hierarchy and information layout across different web pages.
    2. Information content is organised into HTML lists wherever applicable.
    3. The mouse pointer icon changes when a link is hovered through browser functionality.
    4. Add image title, alt text and caption wherever this information is relevant and useful.
    5. Maximise colour contrast for text where applicable.
    6. Actual link text is descriptive enough to inform users where the link points to.
    7. Implement all external links so that they open into new browser tabs.

    Inaccessible content

We are not aware of specific inaccessible content or accessibility issues on our websites. If you identify such content, kindly let us know. Should such an instance arise our aim is to investigate the issue with a view to identify the accessibility issue and bring the affected area into compliance.

    Feedback and contact details

Inevitably, we won’t always get it right. The more services and resources we place online, the more likely it may be to miss some problems, but we remain committed to addressing any access issues promptly. If you experience any difficulties in accessing our websites, or have trouble using any aspect of the website, we would like you to let us know.

    Structure that stays consistent

A presentation selector changes layout only. It must not create a second copy of the content, expose arbitrary colour pickers or let editors remove required semantic labels.

Designer and developer contract. These are structural directions rather than finished artwork. Creative may refine typography, spacing, colour and imagery; development preserves field meaning, content order, keyboard behaviour, responsive rules and the variation’s intended use case.
